In Joel Goldsmith’s teaching, God is the only power, law, and reality in existence. Spiritual power is not a force used by God to defeat or overcome an evil power; rather, because God is infinite Omnipotence, there is no other power in the universe to fight, overcome, or resist.
What is Satan or the Devil?
According to the sources, Satan or the devil is not a real entity, person, or rival power to God. Instead, Goldsmith explains that Satan represents:
- The Universal Belief in Two Powers: Satan, the “carnal mind,” or “mortal mind” is simply the universal human belief that there are two powers—good and evil.
- An Impersonal Tempter: The term “devil” refers to an impersonal suggestion, illusion, or temptation that presents itself to human consciousness for acceptance or rejection.
- The “Adamic” Fall: This illusion originated symbolically in the allegory of Adam and Eve eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Accepting two powers cast humanity out of the “Garden of Eden” into the illusion of sin, disease, lack, and fear.
The Theological Mistake of Fighting the Devil
Goldsmith teaches that traditional theology made a fundamental error by treating Satan as an actual opponent of God:
- God Has No Opponent: God has no enemy to battle, because an infinite God leaves no room for an opposing power or presence.
- Fighting Evil Gives It Power: When people pray for God to destroy Satan, disease, or enemies, they are acknowledging two powers and giving mental reality to a shadow or mirage.
- God Does Not Fight Evil: God is “too pure to behold iniquity” and has no knowledge of evil; therefore, attempting to use God as a weapon against evil is unnecessary and futile.
How to Handle “Satan” or Evil
Goldsmith outlines a clear spiritual approach to handling evil appearances:
- Impersonalize: Recognize that evil (whether sin, sickness, or hostility) does not originate in any person, but is an impersonal suggestion or world hypnotism acting through them.
- “Nothingize”: Since God created all that was made and made it good, anything God did not create—such as evil, disease, or Satan—has no law, substance, or existence. It is merely the “arm of flesh” or temporal nothingness.
- “Resist Not Evil”: Following the teachings of Jesus (“Resist not evil” and “Get thee behind me, Satan”), the spiritual seeker does not battle error, but turns away from the appearance, resting quietly in the realization that God alone is Power.
